Inaugural Lecture Leibniz Professorship Courtney von Hippel
On 12 June 2025, organisational and social psychologist Courtney von Hippel will give her inaugural lecture as Leibniz Professor at Leipzig University in the summer semester 2025 on the topic: "Stereotypes in the Workplace: Hidden Challenges for Employees".
What happens when employees feel stereotyped at work? Decades of research show that stereotypes can significantly impact how employees experience the workplace, but the story is far from simple. This talk will explore what triggers feelings of being stereotyped, how these experiences affect employee well-being and engagement, and why certain groups—such as women in male-dominated fields and older employees—are particularly affected. The talk will also discuss ongoing efforts to identify strategies that could buffer employees from the negative consequences of these experiences and outline future directions for this research.
Bio: Courtney von Hippel is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Queensland in Australia, and a leading researcher on how workplace stereotypes affect employees’ well-being and engagement. Her research focuses on how stereotype-related experiences shape the work lives of women in male-dominated fields, older employees, and others who face bias at work. With over two decades of experience collaborating with organizations, her work bridges theory and practice, providing real-world insights into the challenges employees face and how these experiences influence workplace culture. Her research has been widely cited and has informed policy discussions in Australia and beyond. In 2025, she is a Leibniz Professor at Leipzig University.
The lecture will be held in English.
